This is probably one of the most important initiatives we can support to make a difference to the lives of animals right now. This Bill if passed, will make it illegal to import cat/dog fur to Canada, ban the importation of shark fin, and update animal cruelty sections of the Criminal Code, including the definition of bestiality. Right now, many animal cruelty cases go unpunished due to the lax laws in Canada. Canadian Animal Welfare laws have not been updated since 1892. This Bill needs your support now so please follow the basic steps below to help improve animal welfare protection in Canada.
Basic steps
Find your MP and note of your MP’s address – make sure you are using the Constituency address and not the Parliament address as they are off in the summer.
- Check this list to see if your MP is supporting Bill C-246. If he/she is on this list, he/she has NOT shown their support so proceed to #3. If they are not on this list, you do not need to do anything.
- Send your MP a letter at the Constituency address to ask them to support the bill and you can use this template created by Animal Cruelty Legislation Advocates Canada or create your own.
- Make 2 copies of the letter and send it to:
The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau
302 – 529 Jarry Street East
Montreal, QC, H2P 1V4
and
The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould
104-1245 West Broadway
Vancouver, BC, V6J 1G7
5. Make a phonecall to your MP to tell them that you support this Bill. The
International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW )is using new technology to make it possible to phone your Member of Parliament’s office directly. Please follow this link for more directions.
Thank you for your time in helping to make a difference for the animals!
